Grand Designs have made Bi-folding doors one of the most popular choices for this garden to home connection. A bi-folding door fills a room with light, making it feel bigger, brighter and more beautiful. Our aluminium bi-folding doors are all made to measure and come in a range of styles and colours with ultra slim frames for that added wow factor.

Patio, French and Bi-folding Doors making the right choiceThe numerous high-end projects you see on television where owners have chosen large expensive aluminium systems that gave an interrupted view of idyllic vistas. But not all of us have incredibly deep pockets or views over rolling hills. So French doors and sliding patio doors could be the answer being more affordable but still stylish option. Ultimately your choice will come down to the space, your lifestyle and how you want to use it. So here are a few tips and things that you may want to consider when choosing a patio door:

Do you want to open up a space in its entirety or enjoying interrupted views throughout the year is more important? The main advantage of bi-folding doors is that they stack away neatly concertina fashion at one end of the opening. The main downsides of bi-folding doors is that they are more complicated to simply open a door to let the dog out for example and there are limits on the maximum size of door leafs (circa 1 metre) so you end having an interrupted view when the doors are all closed. Inline sliding doors span larger areas leaving views uninterrupted. Triple-track running options means they can also stack neatly on top of one another.

Bi-fold doors are very flexible as they can stack both inwards and outwards but ultimately, they still do need space to be stacked. Double and triple track options on inline sliding patio doors are great where space is a premium.

All our PVC-U doors are very low maintenance, are energy efficient and come in a wide range of colours and finishes. Aluminium is the best option for larger spans regardless of door type as it has a much better structural integrity mean it can span larger widths and gaps.

Patio doors are easier to use and are probably a better option for little ones or for older people with less mobility. They are far lighter, easier and therefore safer to use. If you are after a lower threshold our Bi-fold and sliding doors come with this option but consider weather exposure with the wrong aspect before you choose this option.

Finally and most importantly Bi-folding doors are far more difficult to fit that standard patio doors, so make sure you use a professional installer with a guarantee.
